Mercury never travels backwards. But the backward motion is not invented either — it is observable, predictable, and caused by simple geometry. Understanding the geometry makes the tradition easier to evaluate, in either direction.
The astronomy: why a planet appears to reverse
Mercury orbits the Sun in about 88 days. Earth takes 365. Both move the same direction, but Mercury moves faster and on a tighter track.
Think of overtaking a slower car. As you pull alongside and pass, the other car appears to drift backwards against the landscape behind it — even though it is still moving forwards. Neither car reversed; your line of sight rotated.
Planets do the same against the background stars. When Earth and Mercury reach the part of their orbits where the line of sight swings the other way, Mercury traces a backward loop across the sky. This is apparent retrograde motion, and it happens to every planet.
Mercury does it three or four times a year for about three weeks each time. Mars does it roughly every two years. The outer planets spend a large share of the year retrograde — Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all retrograde as of September 2026, which is entirely routine.
The part that is genuinely interesting
Retrograde loops were a serious problem for ancient astronomy. If planets circle the Earth, why do they occasionally stop and reverse? The Ptolemaic system answered with epicycles — small circles riding on larger ones — and it worked well enough to predict positions for over a millennium.
Heliocentrism did not win because it was more accurate at first. It won partly because retrograde motion stopped needing a special explanation: put the Sun in the middle and the loops fall out of the geometry for free. To be clear about the evidence: there is no established mechanism by which Mercury's apparent motion affects electronics, travel or conversations, and no body of research supporting it. What there is instead is a well-documented human tendency — once you are told to expect miscommunication, you notice and remember the miscommunications that would have happened anyway.
That does not make the practice useless, but it changes what it is useful for. A recurring three-week prompt to reread contracts before signing, back up your files, and revisit conversations you rushed is a decent operating habit. The prompt works whether or not the planet does.

- Good: reviewing, editing, finishing what is half-done, reconnecting with people you dropped, backing things up, rereading before signing.
- Neutral: everything else. Life does not pause for three weeks, four times a year.
