There is real published research on the moon and human sleep. There is also a real replication problem with it. Most articles on this topic tell you one half and skip the other — so here is both halves, then what to actually do with them.

What the studies found

In 2013, researchers at the University of Basel published an analysis in Current Biology of sleep-lab data gathered years earlier for an unrelated purpose. Because nobody had been thinking about the moon when the data was collected, expectation bias was unusually well controlled. Around the full moon, participants took longer to fall asleep, slept roughly twenty minutes less, and showed reduced deep-sleep activity.

In 2021, a team publishing in Science Advances tracked sleep across Indigenous communities in Argentina — some with electricity, some without — plus university students in the United States. In all groups, sleep started later and ran shorter on the nights leading up to the full moon. The effect appeared even where artificial light was available, which argues against it being purely about brightness.

What went wrong with it

Several larger studies have looked for the same pattern and failed to find it. When you have very large datasets and search for correlations with a 29.5-day cycle, some will appear by chance alone. The 2013 finding in particular has not held up consistently in replication.

The honest summary: a small effect on sleep timing may exist, and it is not established. Anyone telling you the moon definitively controls your body is overselling. Anyone telling you it is definitively nothing is also skipping the published work.

What is not in dispute

  • Tides are real — but they act on ocean basins, not on the water in a person. The moon's tidal pull on your body is smaller than the pull of the wall beside you, because tidal force falls off with the cube of distance and scales with the size of the object.
  • Moonlight is real — a full moon is roughly 250,000 times dimmer than daylight, but in a place without electric light it is the difference between navigable and not.
  • The 29.5-day cycle is real — and it is the oldest calendar humans have. Long before anyone measured sleep, people organised planting, fishing and gathering around it.

So why does lunar timing still work for people?

Because a recurring, externally-scheduled prompt to reflect is genuinely useful, whether or not the moon causes anything. A new moon is not magic — but "every 29.5 days I sit down and decide what I am starting" is a functioning habit, and the sky provides the reminder for free.

This is the same reason a new year's resolution works better than a random Tuesday's resolution. The date does nothing; the marker does something.

How to use the cycle without believing more than the evidence supports

  • New moon — set one small, specific intention. Small enough that you will keep it for four weeks.
  • First quarter — the friction point. Check what got in the way.
  • Full moon — review, not launch. And if you sleep badly, you now know you are in company.
  • Last quarter — decide what to stop.

Does the full moon affect sleep?

Two published studies found shorter sleep around the full moon; larger studies have not consistently replicated it. Treat it as an open question, not a settled fact.

Does the moon affect emotions or behaviour?

The "lunar effect" on hospital admissions, crime and births has been studied extensively and reviews have generally found no reliable relationship. The sleep work is the strongest strand, and even that is contested.

Does the moon pull on the water in my body?

Tidal force depends on the size of the body being pulled. Oceans are thousands of kilometres across; you are not. The tidal effect on a person is negligible.

Then is moon ritual pointless?

Not if you are honest about the mechanism. A reliable prompt to review your life every four weeks has value regardless of what causes the prompt.
