Eight of Cups

A figure walks away from eight neatly stacked cups, into rocky ground, under a moon that is both full and eclipsed. The cups are not broken. Nothing has gone wrong. He is leaving anyway. The Eight of Cups is departure without a grievance. This is the job you cannot fault and cannot stay in, the relationship where nobody behaved badly, the life that looks right on paper. Because there is no crisis to point at, leaving requires a kind of nerve that leaving a bad situation does not. The card is honest about the cost. He is walking into rough terrain at night and he is going alone. What it offers in exchange is the end of pretending, which for some situations is the only trade available.
