Five of Pentacles

Two figures move through snow past a lit stained-glass window, one on crutches, both poorly dressed. The window is right there. Neither of them looks at it. The Five of Pentacles is hardship with help nearby and unregistered. Money, health, work, housing — material trouble of the kind that isolates people precisely when they most need not to be isolated. The shame does most of the damage: it makes asking feel like confessing a failure. The card is clear that the difficulty is real. It is equally clear about the window. Help exists, it is indoors, and the barrier between the street and the light is almost never a locked door. Asking is not the same as failing, and the interval between deciding to ask and asking is where most of the suffering in this card happens.
