King of Cups

The King of Cups sits on a throne that floats on rough water, holding a cup and a sceptre, entirely dry. A ship rides the swell on one side and a fish leaps on the other. The sea is not calm and he is not disturbed by it. He is emotional steadiness under conditions that would upset most people. Where the Queen contains feeling, the King governs it — he is the one who stays level while everyone else reacts, and who can be trusted with the difficult conversation because he will not make it worse. The card's shadow sits very close to its virtue. Composure can be presence or it can be distance, and from the outside they look the same.
